In the last 3 years I wrote release notes nearly every month. That’s approximately 36 sets of notes and because no software is flawless, more than 115 instances of ‘we fixed a bug’. Actually a few more because that doesn’t include the last set of release notes.
One of the hardest parts of writing release notes is to make it enjoyable. Both enjoyable for the customer to read, and for you to write. After all you want them to choose to read and absorb the useful information (if it’s not useful, why are you telling them?), and really, it only took a year of writing them to be bored. I assume if I’m bored writing, then the reader is bored reading.
The many ways of writing ‘we fixed a bug’
To save others the frustration of trying to keep it fresh and creative, here’s my list of nearly 70 ways to write ‘we fixed a bug’. I did repeat them, so it’s not the full 115 instances here. I’ve also removed any proprietary information. Some terms are just generic software terms and not unique, so I’ve left those in. Anything in angle brackets is placeholder with a description of the proprietary information removed.
Oh, and in a list, some look repetitive. Spreading them out over 3 years with 2 different products, it looks like variety.
